Background
On or about 16.Aug.2003, it was revealed that there was a new "owner" of the RingSurf.com webring system. Shortly after that, Robert (Rob) Sheinbein of ezd.com posted on lists soliciting input as to features. A discussion began within the World of Webrings community on the World of Webrings Discussion List.
We wrote a
summary page to capture the primary topics of that discussion.
The New RingSurf
On 27.Nov.2003, Robert Sheinbein announced that the new version of
RingSurf had gone live.
This page will be used to capture problems, annoyances, issues and suggestions
related to this new deployment.
If you have any comments to make about the new RingSurf system, please

RingSurf Wishes
- This list will be updated daily.
List members can click here to wish. Note: RingSurf will be adding a link from the RingSurf website to this page.
- The 2nd url feature reinstated
Ring members are able to list 2 urls when they join a ring (site home page, and page where the ring's navpanel is placed). The Ringmaster can disable this feature, and if enabled can determine which of the 2 urls is used to surf the ring.
- Ring Logo and Navpanel Images
Ring members are able to upload 1 logo (25 kb), and 1 large (15kb) or 3 small images (4kb) to the RingSurf website.
- Navpanel Options for Members
The Ringmaster can provide more than 1 navpanel for use by his or her members, with each navpanel option being displayed above the text box containing the code for that option.
- Server Side Navpanel
Dynamic navpanel served to ring members via JavaScript. Ringmasters having the ability to enable or disable this feature.
- MyRings Page
Beside each ring is listed the number of members, the number of members in queue, and that ring's mail box (Messages from RingSurf or members to that Ring's Ringmaster). Alternating background color for each ring.
- Ringmaster Notes
A Notes link listed in ring admin beside each member, and member in queue. This would be a place where a ringmaster could keep notes on tasks for him or her or that member, reasons why that member had not been approved, and...
- Automated Checking
The RingSurf Engine automatically checks all Member and Queue sites (late at night) at a pre-determined frequency as set by the Ringmaster (disabled, 2 days, 7 days).
All failed Member sites would be moved to the Queue, and then a e-mail would be sent to all failed sites, with a copy for each failed site going to the Ringmaster.
All passed sites in the Queue would be moved to the active Member list, and then a e-mail would be sent to all passed sites, with a copy for each passed site going to the Ringmaster.
Then all sites remaining in the Queue would be deleted after a time set by the Ringmaster (disabled, 7 days, 2 weeks)
- Listing of Ease of Ring Navigation
A listing that would show ring surfers how well maintained the ring is, with 100% being for rings that had the ring's navpanel displayed correctly on all member pages, and say 75% if 25% of the rings did not have the ring's navpanel displayed correctly on all member pages. This feature would quickly separate the bogus rings from the real rings, and would be an insentive for Ringmasters to actively manage their rings (could work best in conjunction with a automated ring checker?). This 'Ease of Navigation' percentage would appear beside each ring as listed in the ring directory, and at the top of each ring's 'List' page.
- Improved and better managed Ring Directory
Ring Surfers can sort rings by:
Name, Date Created, Size, Traffic, Ease of Nav, and if Adoptable
The ring's listing in the directory would include:
Ease of Nav, Ring Name, number of sites, number of sites in queue, number of hits, ring's description, and date created.
Only rings having 10 member sites with the navpanel displayed correctly, would be listed in the directory (automated function).
Ringmasters could update where their ring was listed within the directory.
- Ring Donations
Ringmasters can enable or disable a donation feature. Members could donate to a ring they liked, with a percentage of each donation going to RingSurf (5%?). If this feature were disabled, RingSurf would get 100% of the donation. This feature could possibly result in far better managed webrings being hosted at RingSurf, and maybe even help RingSurf cover it's operating costs?
